Desktop Tower Defense
Wow, this little game is taking over my life. This is practically the only thing I can do with my "safe mode" computer. I'm still not very good at it, because I'm not close to reaching a top score. That scoreboard is CRAZY! Remember add your scores to the group, "hustheman".
When I open up my computer up, I can smell what I think is a leaking electrolytic capacitor. I've blown them up in the past and know what they smell like. Since I havne't disassembled it, I can't physically see which one is blown so I can replace it. Anyway, I think I'll be getting a new computer regardless.
The cards at ATI are out of stock! I hope ATI continues the employee discount program, because it's such a good deal. I don't have high hopes though, especially after ATI was bought out by AMD. They are also behind NVIDIA, as they aren't offering a DX10 card until May at the earliest.
I'm probably not going to get a Mac as I want to do some gaming on this computer, as I've never really had a decent gaming computer before. Running virtualization (XP and OS X) does sound promising though as I hear from Maggie and Mike that it's pretty slick. I probably won't get a laptop either, since I'm looking for a bit more power and it lasting a longer. I might pick up a laptop down the road at some point so I can bring something back and forth from Waterloo/Toronto.
I currently have 3 HDD (80, 250, 320), LCD/keyboard/mouse and can borrow a video card from Matt to wait until ATI/AMD has more cards in stock. I'm not considering a complete system (Dell), although I should research it. Is it cheaper to buy a complete system or build my own?
So I need:
1) Motherboard
2) CPU
3) RAM
4) Video Card
5) Case + power supply
6) OS
Also, I don't have a DVD burner, so I'll probably need to pick one of those up as well. Any advice?

They changed the bash towers so they're more expensive, and also changed the creeps so that there are some pretty hard bosses near the end. I found it much harder to get a high score, and I played that game way too much over last weekend, so I think I'm done (Keith, looks like you win)
DVD burners are super cheap, only about $50 or so.
You could probably get a really cheap dell without a video card and just stick the loaner in there until you get a new one. You could also throw all your old hd's in there, but you'd need to make sure that it has IDE ports (SATA is now dominant). I think it's cheaper to go that route if you can get free shipping ...
in all honesty, i remember a complete system to be about on par with building it urself.... can i buy ur old ram :P i can still use good old ddr400.....
good, i don't want to play dtd anymore :P

It's so much cheaper to get a desktop package than build one ourself now (it's not even worth it).

This is my $389+tax Dell
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor 4200+
• Genuine Windows Vista Home Basic
• 512MB Single Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz - 1DIMM
• 160GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM)
• 16x DVD+/-RW Drive
• 1 Year Next Business Day Onsite/In Home Service and Tech Support
It is AMD X2, not C2D (BestBuy had a doorcrasher $599 refurb C2D desktop yesterday)
Throw some RAMs (I have 2GB now), and ATI X800XL coming from eBay, I am set to go
Have fun finding a desktop, they are really getting better AND cheaper!!
Ah, that looks like the expired RFD dell deal. Pretty damn good deal if you consider all the parts:
from CC:
- X2 4200+ AM2 socket: $132
- optical drive (~ $50)
- 160 GB hd: $70
- crappy Foxconn AM2 mobo with integrated Geforce 6100 (dell has this chipset, I think) $70
- Case + PSU $50
- 512mb ram: $40
No OS
Comes out to 400+ ... and I wouldn't buy that mobo anyway.
that stupid game consumed so much of my life. i think i'm going to get fired because of it HAHA
Andrea, you should post some of your scores to the group!
Cary and Keith, the flying boss is not that bad if you have a fully upgraded swarm tower and some frost towers.
lol i'll play one more time just for kicks...
but you know... if i play one more time.. i'm going to play 2 more times... etc etc....
life is again ruined for the week haha
so can i use ur old ram??? i'm not touching dtd anymore - time to move on to beating utada

I've also moved on. I spent an entire saturday on that game, and now that they've changed it up, I don't wanna do that again :P
